All About Crowns

Your dental crown will look, feel, and function just like a regular tooth.

CrownsCrowns, or “caps” as some call them, are custom-made covers for teeth that have had a root canal (leaving very little tooth structure), cracked or weakened teeth or teeth that are so decayed that a regular filling isn’t sufficient.

Generally, we use a porcelain material to make the crown because it blends best with your other teeth. It takes two appointments to fit a crown.

At the first appointment, we prepare the tooth by making it small enough for the crown to fit over it. Next, we mold an impression of the tooth so that the crown fits between the teeth on either side of it and is basically the same size and shape as the one being capped. At the end of this visit, we attach a temporary crown to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

At the second visit, we cement the permanent crown and make sure that it feels comfortable and natural and that your bite is correct. That’s it!

How long does it last? Your crown could last a lifetime with proper oral hygiene and routine dental examinations and cleanings.

What Are Veneers?

Our teeth can often become discoloured or shift and chip over time.  Veneers are very thin new tooth surfaces that are custom made to fit your teeth and address your particular condition(s). Made from porcelain, they are bonded directly to the tooth surface to whiten and/or align teeth, close up spaces, repair chipped or damaged teeth, or cover tooth enamel that is worn from the aging process or from teeth grinding.

What Are the Benefits of Porcelain Veneers?

There are many benefits of veneers, these include:

  • whitening and/or aligning teeth
  • closing up spaces
  • repairing chipped or damaged teeth
  • covering tooth enamel that is worn.

 How are Veneers Applied?

Prior to the placement of dental veneers, the teeth that will be fitted with the custom-made “shells” need to be prepped. Generally, this requires removing some of the outer layer of tooth enamel and shaping the tooth so that the veneer, which is about the thickness of a fingernail, can be applied to the tooth surface and not stick out.

Next, we take impressions of the teeth to prepare a mould from which the veneers will be made. The moulds are sent to a lab where the veneers that are made. At your next visit, the teeth are cleaned with a mild acidic solution and the veneers are applied with a bonding adhesive that cements them in place.

 Are Veneers Right For Me?

If you are suffering from any of the above-named problems our team at Ellenbrook Dental Clinic can help you. Our professional dentists will evaluate your individual needs to find out what service is best for you. We will guide you through this process, every step of the way.

What Can I Expect After I Receive My Veneers?

It generally takes about two weeks to get used to the shape and feel of your “new” teeth. You may experience some sensitivity to heat and cold during this time.

You can expect your new veneers to last for years if you maintain them properly and avoid biting on hard objects (such as ice cubes and carrots), biting your nails, or using them to open objects!

Maintain proper daily dental hygiene and visit our clinic twice yearly for your routine checkup and scale and clean to be sure that your veneers are shining like new, with no cracks or other visible defects that may need to be addressed.
